New Plymouth

is the major city of the Taranaki Region on the west coast of the North Island of New

Zealand. It is
named after Plymouth, Devon, England, from where the first English settlers migrated. The New
Plymouth District
includes New Plymouth City and several smaller towns. The New Plymouth District is the 15th largest
district (out of 73)
in New Zealand, and has 1.7 percent of New Zealand's population. The district has a population of

68,901 — nearly two
thirds of the total population of the Taranaki Region. This includes New Plymouth City (53,000), Waitara
(6,288),
Inglewood (3,090), Oakura (1,359), Okato (531) and Urenui (429)
The city itself is a service centre for the region's principal economic activities including intensive pastoral
activities
(mainly dairy farming) as well as oil, natural gas and petrochemical exploration and production. It is also
the region's

financial centre as the home of the TSB Bank (formerly the Taranaki Savings Bank), the largest of the

remaining

non-government New Zealand-owned banks.
Notable features are the botanic gardens (e.g. Pukekura Park), the m (6.8 mi) Coastal Walkway

alongside the Tasman

Sea, the Len Lye-designed 45-metre-tall (148 ft) artwork known as the Wind Wand, Paritutu Rock, and views of Mount
Taranaki/Egmont.As described under awards, New Plymouth won multiple awards in 2008. The city was in 2010 chosen as
one of two walking & cycling "Model Communities" by the government. Based on New Plymouth's already positive
attitude towards cyclists and pedestrians, the city received $3.71m to invest into infrastructure and community
programs to
boost walking and cycling.
It is also noted for being a coastal city with a mountain within 30 minutes drive, where residents and

visitors to New
Plymouth can snowboard, ski, water ski and surf all in the same day.
The first aircraft landed at the racecourse in 1920 and commercial flights began using the airport at Bell

Block in June

1937. During World War II this grass airfield became RNZAF Bell Block; and was replaced in 1966 by the

current
tarmac airport, 3 k NE of the old airport site.
Among the city's major industrial companies was Ivon Watkins-Dow, an agricultural chemicals company

founded in

1944 by brothers Ivon, Harry and Dan Watkins and joined as a partner 20 years later by Dow Chemicals

of Michigan.

The company ran a factory at Paritutu making the herbicide 2,4,5-T. A 2005 study found that people

who lived close to
the Ivon Watkins-Dow plant between 1962 and 1987 were likely to have dioxin levels on average four
times higher than

te general public. In some groups the level was as much as seven times as high. A Public Health
Medicine senior
adviser has claimed that based on international findings, the residents' exposure to dioxin may cause
increased rates
of disease, in particular cancer. In March 2007 the Ministry of Health announced it would offer a major
health support
programme to anyone affected. In April 2008 the Ministry clarified that the programme's main feature
would be a free

annual medical check up for those who had lived, worked or studied close to the fact
New Plymouth Fire District covers an area of approximately 30 square kilometres of urban area that is

boarded by rural

farmland to the west, New Plymouth urban city to the east and Mt Taranaki/Egmont to the South.

Concentrated within

the fire zone are the major petro-chemical tank farms of Methanex, Fletcher Challenge Energy, Shell

Todd Oil Services

Ltd, BP, Mobil Oils and Liquid Gas Ltd, containing some of the largest storage tanks in the Southern

region

Hemisphere. Port Taranaki (Westgate Ltd) is also within the zone. Westgate imports and exports large

quantities of

petroleum products - some of these products enter the tank farms by a network of high-pressure

pipelines which are in

a common corridor running along the cliff tops at Omata to the tank farms. Westgate has the largest dry

storage

complex in the country for the storage of dairy produce that is exported overseas.
The career station, New Plymouth Central Fire Station, is based on Liardet Street in the CBD. The

brigade has four

appliances, one HAZMAT/Command unit and two support vehicles based at the station with enough
room to house a
crew to cater for 2 appliances 24/7 with support personal working during the day - the crews work on a
4 on 4 off roster
system (2 days with 2 night shifts). Not only does this particular brigade covers the New Plymouth
metropolitan area,
but also covers the Bell Block area and supports the New Plymouth Airport, although there is a fire
appliance based at
the airport for emergency landings. New Plymouth Central Fire Station was previously based
Powderham Street,
next to the AA building in the early 1900s, 400m from its current location. After the fire bridge moved to
its current
location, the local radio station Energy FM, which is now Mediaworks Radio, used the upper floor for
their operations.
They moved to Devon Street in the late 1980s. The brigade supplies their specialist resources, like their
24m bronto
skylift appliance, HAZMAT/Command unit, Incident Support Vehicle and additional crews, to other

surrounding

Brigades in large emergencies, if needed.
New Plymouth West Volunteer Fire Brigade is New Plymouth's second fire brigade which is based in the
suburban
area of Spotswood, which is close to Port Taranaki, Cool Stores and a number of storage tanks. The brigade has one
appliance which requires volunteers to man when called. New Plymouth West Brigade supports, New Plymouth Central, Oakura, Inglewood and the Waitara Brigades.
Port Taranaki is the home port for HMNZS Endeavour but is based at the Devonport Navy Base on
Auckland's North
ShoreFeatures and attractions[edit]
New Plymouth District has a reputation as an events centre, with major festivals (the annual TSB Bank

Festival of
Lights, Taranaki Powerco Garden Spectacular, WOMAD and the biennial Taranaki Arts Festival), sports
fixtures
(including international rugby, surfing, cricket and tennis matches, and the annual ITU World Cup
Triathlon) and
concerts (from Sir Elton John, Jack Johnson, R.E.M and Fleetwood Mac).
With its rich volcanic soil, the city is well known for its gardens. Chief among them are the 52 ha

Pukekura Park in the

centre of the city (named a Garden of National Significance), and Pukeiti, a rhododendron garden of

international

significance high on the Pouakai Range.
Pukekura Park is also the home of the TSB Bank Festival of Lights, which runs for free every year from

mid-December
to early February. It has daytime and night time programmes of events for people of all ages, and the
festival itself
transforms the park into an illuminated wonderland every evening.
Next to the foreshore in the central city is Puke Ariki – the world’s first purpose-built, fully integrated
museum, library
and information centre which tells the stories of Taranaki in a variety of interactive media.
Nearby is the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, a contemporary art museum and the home of the collection
of film maker and kinetic artist Len Lye. Plans are in place to house Lye's collection in a purpose-built centre next to
thegallery,
making New Plymouth the world centre for Len Lye.
Te Rewa Rewa Bridge which immediately became a symbol of the extensive cycling opportunities that
have been
created in and around New Plymouth.
New Plymouth - Coastal Walkway
The Coastal Walkway is a 11 km path that forms an expansive sea-edge promenade stretching almost

the entire length

of the city, from the Bell Block mouth in the east to Port Taranaki in the west. The pathway includes the
iconic Te Rewa
Rewa Bridge and is ideal for walking, running, cycling or skating, or simply enjoying the view of the
dramatic west coaIt
has won numerous awards, including the Cycle Friendly Award in 2008 for the best New Zealand cycle
facility.
Right next to the Coastal Walkway is the Todd Energy Aquatic Centre, with indoor and outdoor pools, a
diving pool,
hydroslides, spa, sauna and gym.
Mount Taranaki/Egmont provides recreation opportunities, from skiing and snowboarding to rock
climbing and alpine
walks. The North Egmont Visitors Centre is 20 minutes' drive from central New Plymouth.
Taranaki is known as big wave territory with some of the country's best surfing spots found off this
coastline.
The region has 20 golf courses, ranging from nine-hole country courses where you have to move the

sheep, through to

Ngamotu Links–consistently rated one of the best golf courses in New Zealand. All 20 golf courses are

within an hour’s

drive of each other.

Rotorua from Maori:

Te Rotorua-nui-a-Kahumatamomoe, "The second great lake of Kahumatamomoe")
is a city on the
southern shores of the lake of the same name, in the Bay of Plenty area of the North Island of New

Zealand. The city is
the seat of the Rotorua District, a territorial authority encompassing the city and several other nearby
towns. The
majority of the Rotorua District, including the city, is in the Bay of Plenty local government region; a
sizable southern
section and a small western section are in the Waikato local government region. Rotorua city has an
estimated
prmanent population of 56,100; the Rotorua District has a total estimated population of 68,700 of
which 3,600 live in
the Waikato section. The city is in the heart of the North Island, just  kilometres (mi south of Tauranga,
80 kilometres
(50 mi) north of Taupo, 105 kilometres east of Hamilton, and 230 kilometressoutheast of the nation's
most populous
city, Auckland.
Rotorua is a major destination for both domestic and international tourists; the tourism industry is by far

the largest

industry in the district. The city is known for its geothermal activity, and features geysers – notably the

Pohutu Geyser at

Whakarewarewa and hot mud pools. This thermal activity is sourced to the Rotorua caldera, on which

the city lies.

Rotorua is home to the Waiariki Institute of Technology.
The Lakes of Rotorua are a collection of many lakes surrounding the city of Rotorua
The name Rotorua comes from Maori, the full name being Te Rotorua-nui-a-Kahumatamomoe; roto

means lake and

rua two – Rotorua thus meaning 'Second lake'. Kahumatamomoe was the uncle of the Maori chief

Ihenga, the ancestral

explorer of the Te Arawa. It was the second major lake the chief discovered, and he dedicated it to his

uncle. It is the

largest of a multitude found to the northeast of the city, all connected with the Rotorua Caldera and

nearby Mount

Tarawera. The name can also mean the equally appropriate 'crater lake'
The area was initially settled by Maori of the Te Arawa iwi. The first European in the area was probably

Phillip Tapsell

who was trading from the Bay of Plenty coast at Maketu from 1828. He later married into Te Arawa and

became highly

regarded by them Missionaries Henry Williams and Thomas Chapman visited inand Chapman and his

wife established

a mission at Te Koutu in 1835This was abandoned within a year but Chapman returned in 1838 and

established a

second mission at Mokoia Island.
The lakeshore was a prominent site of skirmishes during the New Zealand Wars of the 1860s. A "special

town district"

was created in the 1883, in order to promote Rotorua's potential as a spa destination. The town was

connected to

Auckland with the opening of the Rotorua Branch railway and commencement of the Rotorua Express

train in 1894,

resulting in the rapid growth of the town and tourism from this time forward. Rotorua was established

as a borough in

1922, elected its first mayor in 1923, and decl

Horatio Nelson,

1st Viscount Nelson, KB  September 1758 – 21 October 1805) was a British flag officer
famous for
his service in the Royal Navy, particularly during the Napoleonic Wars. He was noted for his inspirational
leadership and
superb grasp of strategy and unconventional tactics, which resulted in a number of decisive naval
victories. He was
wounded several times in combat, losing one arm and the sight in one eye. Of his several victories, the
best known and
most notable was the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, during which he was shot and killed.
Nelson was born into a moderately prosperous Norfolk family and joined the navy through the influence

of his uncle,

Maurice Suckling. He rose rapidly through the ranks and served with leading naval commanders of the

period before

obtaining his own command in 1778. He developed a reputation in the service through his personal

valour and firm

grasp of tactics but suffered periods of illness and unemployment after the end of the American War of

Independence. The outbreak of the French Revolutionary Wars allowed Nelson to return to service,
where he was
particularly active in the Mediterranean. He fought in several minor engagements off Toulon and was
important in the
capture of Corsica and subsequent diplomatic duties with the Italian states. In 1797, he distinguished
himself while in

command of HMS Captain at the Battle of Cape St Vincent.
Shortly after the battle, Nelson took part in the Battle of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, where his attack was
defeated and he
was badly wounded, losing his right arm, and was forced to return to England to recuperate. The
following year, he won
a decisive victory over the French at the Battle of the Nile and remained in the Mediterranean to support
the Kingdom
of Naples against a French invasion. In 1801, he was dispatched to the Baltic and won another victory,
this time over

the Danes at the Battle of Copenhagen. He subsequently commanded the blockade of the French and

Spanish fleets

at Toulon and, after their escape, chased them to the West Indies and back but failed to bring them to

battle. After a
brief return to England, he took over the Cádiz blockade in 1805. On 21 October 1805, the
Franco-Spanish fleet came
out of port, and Nelson's fleet engaged them at the Battle of Trafalgar. The battle was Britain's greatest
naval victory,
but during the action Nelson was fatally wounded by a French sniper. His body was brought back to
England where he
was accorded a state funeral.
Nelson's death at Trafalgar secured his position as one of Britain's most heroic figures. Numerous

monuments,

including Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square, London, have been created in his memory and his legacy

remains
Nelson received orders on 23 October to take the newly refitted Albemarle to sea. He was instructed to

collect an

inbound convoy of the Russia Company at Elsinore, and escort them back to Britain. For this operation,

the Admiralty

placed the frigates HMS Argo and HMS Enterprise under his command. Nelson successfully organised

the convoy and

escorted it into British waters. He then left the convoy to return to port, but severe storms hampered

him Gales almost

wrecked Albemarle as she was a poorly designed ship and an earlier accident had left her damaged, but

Nelson

eventually brought her into Portsmouth in February 1782.There the Admiralty ordered him to fit the

Albemarle for sea

and join the escort for a convoy collecting at Cork to sail for Quebec.Nelson arrived off Newfoundland

with the convoy

in late May, then detached on a cruise to hunt American privateers. Nelson was generally unsuccessful;

he succeeded

only in retaking several captured British merchant ships and capturing a number of small fishing boats

and assorted

craft. In August he had a narrow escape from a far superior French force under Louis-Philippe de

Vaudreuil, only

evading them after a prolonged cha Nelson arrived at Quebec on 18 September. He sailed again as part

of the escort

for a convoy to New York. He arrived in mid-November and reported to Admiral Samuel Hood,

commander of the New

York station. At Nelson's request, Hood transferred him to his fleet and Albemarle sailed in company with

Hood, bound

for the West Indies. On their arrival, the British fleet took up position off Jamaica to await the arrival of

de Vaudreuil's

force. Nelson and the Albemarle were ordered to scout the numerous passages for signs of the enemy,

but it became

clear by early 1783 that the French had eluded Hood.During his scouting operations, Nelson had

developed a plan to

assault the French garrison of the Turks Islands. Commanding a small flotilla of frigates and smaller

vessels, he

landed a force of 167 seamen and marines early on the morning of 8 March under a supporting

bombardment.The

French were found to be heavily entrenched and after several hours Nelson called off the assault.

Several of the

officers involved criticised Nelson, but Hood does not appear to have reprimanded him.[44] Nelson

spent the rest of

the war cruising in the West Indies, where he captured a number of French and Spanish prizes. After

news of the

peace reached Hood, Nelson returned to Britain in late

Palmerston North is located in New Zealand

Palmerston North (Maori: Te Papaioea or transliterated Maori: Pamutana), commonly referred to by

locals as

Palmerston, or colloquially Palmy, is the main city of the Manawatu-Wanganui region of the North Island

of New

Zealand.
The city is inland, located in the eastern Manawatu Plains, near the north bank of the Manawatu River.

The city is 35 km

(22 mi) from the river's mouth and 12 km (7 mi) from the end of the Manawatu Gorge. It is also about

140 km(87 mi)

north of the capital, Wellington.
The city covers an area of 325.94 square kilometres 126 sq mi). The official limits of the city take in

rural areas to the

south, north-east, north-west and west of the main urban area, extending to the Tararua Ranges;

including the town of

Ashhurst at the mouth of the Manawatu Gorge, the villages of Bunnythorpe and Longburn in the north

and west

respectively. Included in the city limits are fertile agricultural areas.
The city's population is expected to exceed 85,000 (2012), it is the country's seventh largest city and

eighth largest

urban area. The city is the fourth fastest growing in New Zealand, and is set to break the 100,000

population mark in

the near future, qualifying to be a metropolitan area.[citation needed] One million people live within a

two-hour drive

(200 km/120 mile radius).
The city's location was once little more than a clearing in a forest and occupied by small communities of

indigenous

Maori, who called it Papaioea, believed to mean "How beautiful it is". In the mid 19th century, it was

discovered and

settled by Europeans (mostly of British and Scandinavian origin). On foundation, the settlement was

bestowed the

name Palmerston, in honour of Viscount Palmerston, a former Prime Minister of Great Britain. The suffix

"North" was

added in 1871 by the Post Office to distinguish the settlement from Palmerston in the South Island. The

Maori

transliteration of Palmerston North, is Pamutana (Nota). However, Te Papaioea is the preferred Maori

name.

Range, a growing
